Subject: GPS/PC Interface help
I have a Garmin GPS receiver which I would like to interface with my PC.
Does anyone have any info on the NMEA 0183 protocol referenced in the
manual? Or is there a more appropriate SIG where I might pose this question?
Thanks in advance.

Well, that's the idea. It powers down when nothing is happening, taking
a peek at the frequency every once in a while to see if there's any
activity it should wake up for.
John's reply:
I agree with all you excellent advice, except possibly the above. He should
able to see the word "save" in the display. Again, he may not be holding the
F button while also pushing save.

Anybody having any modifications for the Realistic PRO-2032?
I am especially interested in changing the step from 5kHz to 12.5kHz in the
68-88 MHz band. 5kHz doesn't "fit" the channelsteps in Sweden <grin>.
Any other modification is of course of BIG interest!

That's oversimplifying things a bit, I think. I'm a VE too...we give all
of our exam sessions following our club meetings, which means we never
even START before 8:30 pm, and we're expected to be out of our meeting
site by 11. Given the amount of time it takes for a person to take all
those written exams, it would not be possible for us to do a nonlicensed
to extra upgrade! I'm sure many other teams have the same problem. We
don't keep any of the money anyway. I and my fellow VE's have spent 100's
of hours on our job and an extra $5.75 exam fee doesn't really mean much.
I'd personally LOVE to have the opportunity to serve someone who could do
such an upgrade but in our case it isn't practical. 73 - Alan NS0B

I owned an Astron RS20A on an extended business trip and sold it when I
got home. I was very happy with it, but I sold it because I use a 40A
Luke in my shack. It has been running continuously for three years
for packet and VHF ragchewing without incident. Pricey, but _very_
reliable.

Actually there isn't. Ten Tec actually sold the 2510 Mode B satellite
station, which transmitted on 435 and converted 2 meters to 10 meters.
See the October 1985 issue of QST for a product review.
I'm not sure how sensible the requirement is on the millimetric bands,
like 241 GHz. I'd consider it perfectly acceptable for someone to get
their transmitter going first, perhaps aligning it with some sort of
waveguide filter/detector, and then working on a usable receiver after
he has some known signal source (the transmitter). In some areas,
it might even make sense to set up a beacon and see who can hear it
first.
